Make the little rules first

How Secret Santa exclusions work

Set exclusions before drawing names to stop a participant being assigned a particular person. Too many restrictions can leave a small group without a valid draw, so agree only the rules you need.

Agree exclusions before anyone shops

Common requests include keeping partners, housemates or last year’s pairings apart. Ask the group which restrictions matter before creating the draw. Avoid rules that make participation awkward, such as excluding most of the group for one person. Everyone still needs an eligible recipient and someone who can buy for them.

Check the direction of each rule

‘Alex must not draw Sam’ is different from ‘Sam must not draw Alex’. Add both directions if both are required. A rule about last year’s pairing might need only one direction. Wishmingle prevents someone drawing themselves automatically, so you do not need to add each participant’s own name as an exclusion.

Try a small example

In a three-person exchange with Alex, Sam and Jo, a normal draw can send Alex to Sam, Sam to Jo and Jo to Alex. If Alex is blocked from drawing both Sam and Jo, there is nobody left for Alex. Adding more randomness cannot solve that. You need to remove a restriction or change who is participating.

Create your draw on Wishmingle

Open Secret Santa, sign in and choose Start a Secret Santa. Add 3 to 30 participant names, a date and a gift budget. Set the who-cannot-draw-whom rules, check each direction and run the draw. If the restrictions cannot be satisfied, review them with the group before trying again.

Send each person only their invitation

Use the individual WhatsApp sharing control or copy each participant’s private invitation into a direct message. A person signs in, joins the group and reveals their assigned recipient. Anyone holding an unused invitation may be able to claim it, so avoid putting all invitations in a public group chat.

Treat a redraw as a group decision

Changing assignments after people have started buying can waste money and spoil surprises. If someone drops out, speak privately to the affected people and agree what happens next before creating another draw. Wishmingle organisers can inspect the assignments they distribute, so explain that arrangement to your group in advance.

Your questions, answered

Can Secret Santa exclusions make a draw impossible?

Yes. Every participant needs an allowed recipient, and each recipient needs a different buyer. Small groups with many exclusions can have no valid arrangement.

Do I need to stop people drawing themselves?

No. Wishmingle prevents self-assignments automatically. Exclusions are for additional pairings you want to block.
